TARI Uyole stands out as one of the largest and most influential research centres under the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI). Strategically located in the heart of the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, the centre serves as the primary research hub for the country’s major food basket regions—Ruvuma, Njombe, Iringa, Mbeya, Songwe, Rukwa, and Katavi. Geographically, TARI Uyole lies within latitude 7° to 9° South and longitude 30° to 38° East, with its headquarters situated at an altitude of 1,798 metres above sea level, offering a cool, temperate climate ideal for diverse agricultural research.

Historically known as ARI Uyole, the centre has evolved into a leading research, innovation, and coordination hub dedicated to improving agricultural productivity and sustainability across the Southern Highlands. It is mandated to conduct and coordinate scientific research on key crops such as potato, maize, pyrethrum, avocado, and agricultural mechanization—all of which play a vital role in ensuring food security and economic growth in Tanzania. Alongside these, the centre also undertakes research on beans, wheat, agroforestry, soybean, and soil fertility management, integrating a multidisciplinary approach to tackle emerging agricultural challenges.

To ensure comprehensive coverage of the diverse agro-ecological zones across the Southern Highlands, TARI Uyole operates through eight strategically positioned substations—Mbimba, Mitalula, Milundikwa, Nkundi, Igeri, Kikusya, Ndengo, and Suluti. Each substation focuses on site-specific research, enabling adaptive experimentation, data collection, and technology validation across varied climatic and soil conditions. Through its rigorous scientific research, advanced breeding programs, and strong partnerships with farmers, policymakers, and development stakeholders, TARI Uyole continues to drive agricultural transformation in Tanzania.
